Last Sunday I had the privilege of attending a photography workshop lead by Larry Spencer of Spencer Photography, and sponsored by NEO Pro Imaging Inc. in the great city of Cleveland, Ohio.
What a long, but wonderful day! We started our 13-hour adventure at 9am in Up Three Studios in Tremont, Ohio. This was a warehouse-studio with several levels and had a rustic, broken-down look to it . . . which is my favorite! We took some images of the bride and groom (which were really soon-to-be newly weds!) as if they were getting ready for the day and set up a scene similar to that of a reception hall. Larry Spencer is a master of light and finding just the right spots for creating the perfect light.
This image below was located in a small room with a hole in the wall. The hole was the only light used for lighting the subject, which produced excellent direction of light and a subdued effect.
Below the subject was lit by natural light falling in from a window.
Our next stop was Emanuel Lutheran Church, to work with the typical situations one faces in low-lit churches. We worked with flash, and making sure to look at all angles of a subject to see if there is a more interesting view.
NEO Pro Imaging Inc. was our next stop. Dave from NEO was kind enough to grab us some lunch as it was already 2:30PM by this time! The day certainly goes fast when you’re lovin’ what you’re learnin’!
After some bonding time over our Winking Lizard meals, we hit the streets to chase the light! Now, I can’t tell you how odd it was to see a group of 12 photographers with, at this point, two sets of brides & grooms. There was honking and waving and cell-phone-picture galloring. Of course, it also was Cinco de Mayo, so it was a party everywhere! Here’s a few images from downtown Cleveland, all of these with natural light:
We even had a senior from our group do some modeling for us:
We then spent some time, on our own, posing the models:
I was able to convince one of our own photographers to step in front of the camera for a shot:
What troopers these brides and grooms were:
As we headed back to NEO Pro Imaging, Inc., we were met by Brandi Hamerstone of All Events Planned. Brandi shared with us some great pointers on how to better work with other vendors, especially wedding planners, to make the wedding day run as smoothly as possible. After all, it should be the goal of each of the vendors to make the day the best day possible for the Bride and Groom!
Finally, we finished out the day with a few night shots. These images were lit by two video lights:
What a great day of learning and networking with fellow photographers. I’m always encouraged after workshops such as these. Now it’s time to put all this knowledge to use!
