Practice as a Wedding Photographer – Uniontown, OH Wedding Photographers

As wedding photographers, we are constantly practicing on our off-time in preparation for our clients’ wedding days to make sure that come the big day, we are at our best! Today we received a new Macro lens and were excited to try it out! The Macro lens is perfect for ring and other detail shots taken throughout the wedding day. We wanted to take a moment and share our at-home photoshoot with some of our own rings. Looking forward to using this new lens at our next wedding!!

Downtown Akron Ohio Photography Session – Akron Art Museum

Winter comes as a challenge to many photographers, especially wedding photographers.  There is a certain lull to business that lends time to better your craft and prepare for the coming busy season.  My mentor and my friend, Larry Spencer of Spencer Photography, Inc. is an amazing Cleveland, Ohio photographer.  He has pushed me and challenged me to better myself. This evening I had the opportunity to work with Larry and his back up assistant, Deb in Downtown Akron, OH near the Akron Art Museum with clients Chantel and Timmell.

The focus of tonight, as always, is lighting.  Lighting is key to creating a beautiful image, and everything else follows.  Since it was an evening session, lighting was even more of a challenge to find and create.  The Akron Art Museum is a great daytime location as it provides opportunities for window reflections and silver siding for a natural light reflector, as well as many geometric shapes and lines.  Larry spent the evening trying some new techniques with and without video lights.  Video lights are great as you can set up the lighting and see through the lens exactly the image you will create, however they do not freeze movement quite like strobe flash does, so it requires a steadier hand.

One lighting technique that I would like to personally work on is hair lighting.  When setting up off camera flash or video lights, there are often two lights used, one to light the subjects face, etc, and one to light the subject’s hair.  The hair lighting gives an extra dimension to the image.  Standing between the two lights, as if standing at the peak of a triangle, gives optimal lighting to the subjects face, creating contrast and simple shadows which helps to show the details of the subject, instead of blasting out all of the details with on-camera flash.

Other light sources used were street lights, lighting from a lighted display billboard and even the lights on the very top of the art museum.  The top of the art museum lighting was an awesome technique.  Larry posed the couple standing in front of the museum and then laid with his back on the ground.  He proceeded to instruct the couple to bend at their waist until it appeared in his lens that the couple were standing upright.

I am so thankful to have a mentor like Larry Spencer to give insight and direction into this ever evolving art.

At the end of the night, Deb and I got to test out our modeling skills and pose for one last shot of the evening:

Celebrating Today’s Bride Magazine & Bridal Shows – 25 years! – Serving Northeast Ohio

Celebrating 25 years with Today’s Bride Magazine & Bridal Shows!  2013 was Behr Photography, LLC’s first year advertising with Today’s Bride.  We attended the Akron, OH Bridal Show at the John S. Knight center in January, and advertised in their Akron magazine and showcase magazines.  Today’s Bride has given me the chance to expand my business as a wedding photographer and meet brides where they are, all while getting my name out there and sharing my love and passion for what I do.  The employees at Today’s Bride have been so great and feel more like family than business partners.

To celebrate the achievement of 25 years, Today’s Bride held a special event at the historic Taverne of Richfield in Richfield, OH. This location was particularly special in that it was where they held their very first bridal show!  I was given the chance to meet the owners of Today’s Bride, Jim and Denise Frericks, as well as meet, network and catch up with several other wedding vendors.

Today’s Bride went above and beyond with a room of Hors d’œuvres, a dessert-filled room, and three floors of beautifully decorated tables and live music in the basement.

I am so proud to be a part of this company and a part of the wedding industry.

Here’s to you, Today’s Bride!  25 years!  Congratulations on this spectacular achievement!

Owning a Photography Business – Uniontown Ohio Photographer

Just a tid-bit from the artist:

Owning your own business is hard.  Period.  It definitely has its challenges, most certainly, but it also has its rewards.  The rewards are what keep pressing me forward.

The business portion of a photography business challenges and stretches me.  From learning sales taxes and yearly taxes, keeping track of income and expenses, learning what can even be considered an expense, marketing, advertising, keeping on top of blogging, selling yourself and getting your name out there . . . it’s almost tiresome.   Buying equipment is also extremely expensive, to the point where I could easily go into debt if I wasn’t careful.  Sometimes I can’t believe how much I actually carry around with me at a wedding.  And honestly, even after you pour your heart and soul into it, it’s all a risk.  It’s a risk to put yourself out there and hope for positive response.  To pour every last dime into advertising and sales, and pray that they see your sincerity and love for the art.  It’s a business that can be in flux, and can die off if you let it.

The photography portion, the FUN part, of my business is what helps me to continue to improve myself and strive to make myself into something better than I am. Every. Single. Day.  It’s the artist in me that drives my business and my desire to give my clients the absolute best.  I adore the rush of a wedding day; having the knowledge that what you are doing is extremely important and utilizing the skills and knowledge you’ve obtained to create something beautiful . . . it’s amazing.  It’s seeing the love of the couple and learning their own love story, which every one is unique and special in its own way.  Even the high school seniors I’ve worked with are awesome.  Some that I have worked with want nothing to do with getting senior pictures taken, whether it be because of self-image insecurities, or that they are at the end of their senior year and ready to roll on forward.  I love the challenge that comes with these particular clients. Even more so, I love hearing afterwards that they absolutely adored their images and actually had some fun too!

These are some of the things that keep me going.  Keep me pushing through the expenses, the time spent marketing, blogging, advertising, and having to sell yourself and your work.  It is hard. Period.  But well worth the challenge. Bring it on.

Today’s Bride Bridal Show – John S. Knight Center in Akron Ohio

Akron Oh bridal show Akron, Ohio photographer 03Every year Today’s Bride Magazine & Bridal Shows holds several Bridal Show events.  This year was Behr Photography, LLC’s first year to have a booth at the show held at the John S. Knight Center in Akron, OH.  Preparing for the show happened MONTHS and MONTHS ago with choosing portraits to display, preparing freebies (like our pretty pink pens!), prepping sample albums, bag stuffers and handouts, commercial ads and training friends and family who would help out the day of the show.

As always, Today’s Bride put on a fabulous event!  There were over 900 attendees, 100+ wedding vendors, and a fashion show at this 7-hour event.  We were so excited to be a part of this and meet with brides face-to-face.  It gave us the opportunity to express our passion and personalities alongside with our work.

Today we even received an e-mail from a bride that we spoke to, “Hi Danae! You really stood out to me today with your personality…I could really tell you have a passion for what you do…”.

This is to hoping we have more clients who can see our love for capturing these special moments!  Looking forward to the potential clients to come!
